http://www.irides-icdm.med.tohoku.ac.jp/index.html
Current Profile and Research Topic:
Prof. Shinichi Egawa transformed from a pancreatic surgeon to a disaster medical diplomat after getting involved in the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Prof. Egawa actively promotes international, domestic, and inter-disciplinary understanding and collaboration of disaster medicine and disaster risk reduction (DRR) science. IRIDeS is a unique institute with a Disaster Medical Science Division to promote comprehensive and practical disaster science. Prof. Egawa organized the International Symposium on Disaster Medical and Public Health Management in May 2014 in Washington DC, which became a successful initiative for the health sector to incorporate their opinion to Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 adopted by 187 UN member states in the 3rd World Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015, Sendai, Japan. Research topics include medical needs, medical coordinator, simulation, information analysis, implementation of the health aspect of the Sendai Framework, and education on disaster medicine.
Professional Assignment and Education:
Prof. Egawa has served as an Executive Editor for disaster medicine in the Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine since 2021 and became Editor-in-Chief in Jan. 2023.
He also serves as Deputy Editor for Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, and the Advisory Working Group for the Project for Strengthening the ASEAN Regional Capacity on Disaster Health Management (ARCH Project).
